What is cold rolled annealed steel strip?

Cold rolled steel strip is a type of steel that has undergone a cold rolling process that involves passing material between rolls at room temperature.  Compared to hot-rolled steel, this process produces a thinner but stronger product.  

Cold rolled steel strips typically range in thickness from 0.5 mm to 6 mm, making them ideal for applications requiring precise dimensions and tight tolerances.  It also boasts excellent surface quality due to its smooth finish and no oxidation or rust.  

Unlike hot-rolled steel, cold-rolled steel strips are not heated during the production process.  This means that there is no distortion or warping due to high temperatures, resulting in more consistent properties throughout the material.  

Cold rolled steel strips can be made from a variety of grades of carbon and alloy steels, providing manufacturers with a variety of options depending on their specific needs.  In addition, this material can be further processed by annealing or tempering processes to further improve its mechanical properties.

What is annealed

Annealing is a metal heat treatment process, which refers to the metal is slowly heated to a certain temperature, held for a sufficient time, and then cooled at a suitable speed.  Broadly speaking, annealing is a heat treatment process for materials, including metal materials and non-metallic materials.  Moreover, the annealing purpose of the new material is similar to that of the traditional metal annealing.

(1) Reduce hardness and improve machinability;

(2) Reduce residual stress, stabilize size, reduce deformation and crack tendency;

(3) Refine the grain, adjust the structure, eliminate the structure defect;

(4) Uniform material structure and composition, improve material properties or prepare the organization for later heat treatment.

In production, annealing process is widely used. According to the purpose of the workpiece requirements of annealing, there are many kinds of annealing process specifications, commonly used are complete annealing, spheroidizing annealing, and stress relief annealing.

The role of steel pipe annealing

Removing stress: Steel pipes may have internal stress during manufacturing, processing and welding, resulting in deformation, cracking or other quality problems.  Annealing  by heating and cooling, the internal stress of the steel pipe can be released and eliminated, reducing the risk of deformation and cracks.  

Improve toughness: annealing makes the grain of the steel pipe grow and reshape again, so that it has better toughness and ductility.  Toughness is the ability of the material to resist fracture, so that the steel pipe is not easy to break when it is subjected to impact or tensile force.  

Softened material: During the annealing process, the steel pipe will undergo a process of high temperature heating and gradual cooling, which reduces the hardness and strength of the steel pipe, thus making it easier to process and deform.  This is very important for subsequent processes such as cold working, cutting and welding.
